What is it about?

We provided coaching to support families of children who have autism. We checked to make sure that we provided the families consistent and high quality coaching in several ways. first we organized a strong plan. Next we trained the therapists how to coach, and made them meet the standards so we felt sure that every family got high quality coaching. Third, we taped each coaching session so we could verify that the therapists did and said what we trained them to do. Finally, we asked the families about their experience to be sure we met the families' needs. All of our steps told us we provided high quality coaching to support these families as they cared for their child.

Why is it important?

When people seek support from professionals, they have a right to expect they will get high quality and consistent care no matter who provides the services. Professionals must take responsibility for showing how they are meeting high quality standards to assure the public they are getting what they need and want. Fidelity testing is an accepted way to show consistency of services.

Perspectives

This study is about occupational therapy services. Occupational Therapists are passionate about caring for individuals, groups and families, but we must also make sure that we are providing high quality and evidence based care. This study not only reports on the consistency of our intervention, it also provides a structure for other providers to demonstrate the high quality of their interventions.
