ALS patient donates his organs after euthanasia
Peter Veen has ALS, an invasive disease that causes his muscles to stop working one by one. He has only one wish left and that is to donate his organs after he dies. He explained this to his general practitioner at an early stage in his illness. The GP didn’t actually know what to say: organ donation after euthanasia was difficult and only took place on rare occasions. It inspired both men to work to achieve a guideline that was approved a few weeks ago. It clarifies many aspects for both doctors and patients. It came just in time for Peter, who died on Monday evening and will be buried today. EenVandaag (OneToday) spoke to him shortly before he died. We also talk to Peter’s GP, Han Mulder, who is also the chairman of the committee that drafted the guideline.
