What is it about?

Medical assistance in dying is possible in 8 countries by now when a patient suffers unbearable. Organ donation after dying widespread througout the world and saves lives of those in need of vital organs. Combining these procedures leads to the paradoxical situation where a suffering patient requesting for death can have the fullfillment of helping up to 5 other suffering patients with his/her sick body with the gift of live.

Why is it important?

An increasing number of patients requesting MAiD, also request the possibility of donating their organs after there death. This article is about the first time this combination procedure called ODE is performed with preserving the dignity of dying in the privacy of the home of the dying person (ODEH: organ donation after euthanasia from home). This optimal combines the essence of good palliative care with peacefull dying in the private surrounding of the house of the patient en de possibility to donate organs.
