What is it about?

Habitat loss due to human activities has been one on the major threats to the long term survival of the tiger. We developed a tool to track changes in tiger habitats and presented current state of tiger habitat across 13 tiger range countries.

Why is it important?

The tool we developed uses high resolution forest change data, updated annually, available to anyone with an internet access for free. This tool enables conservationists to detect and assess forest loss in critical corridors or protected areas, or scale up to landscapes or suites of landscapes to monitor conservation progress towards regional or global targets.

Perspectives

This study used a high-resolution global forest change data across 13 tiger range countries, to track where forest loss occurred and when it happened. The tool used in this paper is now available at Global Forest Watch website for anyone to use it . This, therefore, is the first such resource that will enable conservationists and managers around the world—from those located in departmental offices down to field offices—to monitor habitat loss in forests in near-real time and take quick action to address the drivers of forest habitat loss.
