What is it about?

Recently discovered 3D fluids exhibiting phases with vector symmetries, such as ferroelectric and ferromagnetic nematics, have sparked intense studies of their behaviour in confinement. We demonstrate one of the most remarkable consequences of the high spontaneous polarisation in fluid ferroelectrics - the formation of static liquid fibres.

Why is it important?

These ferroelectric liquid fibers have exceptional nonlinear optical properties, a strong response to electric fields, and excellent potential for applications in smart and multifunctional materials, light manipulation, actuation, and energy harvesting.

Perspectives

This research was a joint effort between our research group in Magdeburg, Germany and researchers at Merck Electronics KGaA in Darmstadt, Germany. It exemplifies successful collaboration between academia and industry.
