A detailed code of ethics is key to consumer safety. It outlines a profession's scope of practice and highlights potential pitfalls. The adequacy of varying ethical codes in current popular alternative health care professions are evaluated.

Why is it important?
Complementary and alternative practices are becoming increasingly popular. As the demand rises, so will the public pressure for them to be covered by insurance panels. Enriching their code of ethics is the first step to becoming accepted by the peer community, and eventually, the legislature.
Perspectives
Philosophically speaking, ethics are necessary for luxuries to exist. There is no point to a service which is not required to survive, especially when it does harm. People would get by without acupuncture or counseling, so if they decide to participate in it, they must at the very least go unpunished.
