What is it about?

Based on reliability theory, the study evaluated the probability of collision on sag vertical curve proposed by geometric design standards. The evaluation compared the probabilities of collision under the assumption of different headlamp parameters, namely the headlamp mounting height and vertical spread angle of light.

Why is it important?

The reliability-based method overcomes the difficulties of ignoring de stochastic nature of variables as the variability of random variables was comprised. Safety modelling on these alignments is more in line with reality.

Perspectives

This research creates a new paradignm on the method used to propose design parameters of road sag curves in standards.
