What is it about?

This paper describes the challenges of climate change in coastal communities especially among populations that believe nothing can be done about climate change and it presents possible techniques for enhancing knowledge and awareness of adaptation. It focuses on Small Island Developing States which featured in the Paris Climate Change Conference in 2015 and are again in the spotlight at the Bonn meeting in 2017.

Why is it important?

The paper is important because it communicates a key message that policymakers and decision-makers should become familiar with local knowledge that could help improve adaptation responses to climate change especially in rural coastal communities that are far removed from the centre of decision-making.

Perspectives

It is hoped that this article is thought-provoking for policymakers and decision-makers to understand the perspectives of vulnerable coastal communities on climate change and that they would in turn mainstream these views into policies, programmes and projects that tackle climate change adaptation.
