What is it about?

This paper investigates how farmers and traders manage storage losses in their own small ways. We analyze in detail the strategies and mechanisms that farmers and traders adopt to reduce loss of yam tubers during storage. We find that traditional methods and strategies adopted by the actors help them to reduce storage losses significantly, despite the numerous rigidities that characterize their production and storage systems.

Why is it important?

Postharvest losses are a threat to global food security. Research shows that the certainty of increasing food by reducing postharvest losses far outweighs increasing food through more production.

Perspectives

The findings reported in this paper have policy appeal, and communicate that efforts and investments committed to postharvest losses have long term social benefits
