What is it about?

The study of the morphological evolution of the Lower Zambezi River downstream of the Kariba and Cahora Bassa dams was made by means of a 1-D mathematical model. The main aim of the research is to explain of a changing water flow can alter the morphodynamics of a river in terms of sediment transport and cross-section shape. The use of simplified 1-D models permits the study of remote areas using only a few input data.

Why is it important?

This research contributes to the evaluation of the impact of two large impoundments in one of the major African rivers, located in a remote area. Moreover, this study shows the reliability of 1-D models in describing the long-term morphological evolution of watercourses at basin scale.
