What is it about?

Satisfaction with using a public transport service is multidimensional: how long it takes to use the service, how safe and secure one feels when using the service, how easily one can access the service, and how comfortable one feels whilst riding the service. This paper unpacks the factors that affect satisfaction and how satisfaction with public rail service can be increased.

Why is it important?

Urbanisation is increasing, cities are becoming more crowded and facing severe traffic congestion and subsequently air and noise pollution. To reduce congestion more people should use public transport, but it is not easy to motivate people to switch from the comfort of their private cars to public transport. Indeed, people need to be satisfied with public transport service to use it.

Perspectives

Current urbanisation rate and increasing income levels result in higher numbers of private car ridership, which translates to congestion, air and noise pollution, and accidents in mega cities. Using private cars is not sustainable in large cities and we need policies towards more sustainable transport. The better we understand what makes people choose public transport over private car the better policies we can devise to increase public transport ridership.
