What is it about?

The article explores an e-participation phenomenon from the perspectives of its key actors. The research relies heavily on the analysis of empirical data derived from various socioeconomic settings in an emerging digital society. The case study of numerous digital participatory platforms has provided a good opportunity to elaborate further on existing theories about collaborative nature of this universal movement.

Why is it important?

The roles of its main stakeholders, namely public agencies, non-governmental organizations, independent developers, civic, business, academic and journalistic communities, were analyzed accordingly through the prism of related participatory activities and collaborative partnerships they create. In this regard, the paper aims to understand how these stakeholders participate in and contribute to the movement, who their key partners are and, more importantly, how they are interconnected with each other in advancing related participatory platforms.

Perspectives

The paper provides a more holistic eye-bird perspective on the networking nature of the phenomenon through the perspectives of its key interlockers. Conceptually, collaborative aspects of related interactions between various stakeholders are explored from the perspectives of,respectively, classic (i.e., government agents, businesses and citizens) and non-traditional players(i.e., non-profit organizations, independent developers and journalistic communities). Since the last three stakeholder lenses are the least developed in academic literature, the paper also aims to shed additional light on participating roles of these actors, too, by resorting to the content analysis of platforms where such activities could be identified and traced. Such an approach is helpful in under-standing civic engagement, i.e., cooperative and participatory processes that are generated and promoted via such digital interactions.
