What is it about?

This study examines what factors are critical in speeding up the development of smallholder farmer cooperatives by examine three cocoa cooperatives in San Martin Peru. We found that in addition to the importance of strong finances strong relationships with buyers and members were critical in the success of the cooperatives.

Perspectives

Besides the insights in cooperative development, the article provides a new, useful framework in evaluating farmers' associations in developing countries - something has yet to be addressed.
