Perspectives

Sundaram uses a nuanced, yet undeviating approach, and engages found objects to address social concerns and produce unsentimental artworks that provoke audience responses that range from comforting to disturbing. Entrenched in socio-cultural and political histories, his artworks symbolize the specific nature of their subjects’ experiences, and permit them to challenge and stir painful reminiscences embedded in struggle and loss, and even in victory and revival. The exhibition’s installations shape an immersive arc of historic injuries juxtaposed alongside depictions of contemporary social issues, which are disturbing while engaging. The allegorical jocularity in Sundaram’s creations that is intelligible, clear and lucid, slowly penetrates the eyes and minds of the viewer as an in-depth, lingering experience.
