What is it about?

We surveyed librarians in China's Greater Bay Area to understand how they view and use artificial intelligence (AI) in their libraries. The study found that librarians generally feel positive about AI and see their role in teaching others how to use AI tools. However, they want clearer direction from library leadership about AI implementation plans. Librarians strongly desire training on AI tools and want to create regional forums to share experiences with other libraries. The study recommends that library leaders develop clear strategies for using AI and provide more staff training. Overall, librarians are eager to embrace AI as part of their mission to support information literacy.

Why is it important?

Our focus on China's Greater Bay Area, a major economic and technological hub, provides insights into AI adoption in a non-Western context. The results have practical implications that can help library administrators make informed decisions about how to adapt to change and better integrate AI into their service offerings.

Perspectives

It was an excellent experience working with my co-author on this project. I learned more about our region, and hope to be able to build upon this work by contributing to new collaborations with libraries in the Greater Bay Area.
