What is it about?

This study delves into how the work conditions of leaders, specifically their autonomy and workload, affect their ability to lead in a transformational style and, in turn, influence their followers' job experiences. Based on data from 711 employees and 82 leaders at three different points over a period of up to 14 months, we focused on how much autonomy leaders had in their jobs and their workload. The findings revealed that when leaders have more autonomy and a manageable workload, they are more likely to exhibit transformational leadership qualities. These qualities, in turn, positively affect their followers’ sense of autonomy in their jobs. However, the study did not find a significant link between leaders' work conditions and their followers' workload.
