Serum vitamin D levels are related to not only bone health but also insulin homeostasis. We have shown that lower serum vitamin D levels during second trimester were related to development of gestational diabetes mellitus.

Why is it important?
Gestational diabetes mellitus have negative health outcomes for both fetus and pregnant. If health care professionals evaluate the serum vitamin D levels during early pregnancy and treat them, it is possible to obtain positive results in terms of both pregnant and newborn health.
