What is it about?

This evaluation explored how a professional development programme for teachers was devised by two teams of researchers. It was a two-year programme designed to support teachers’ expertise in six areas of science teaching.

Why is it important?

As a result of interviews with the developers and teachers, four themes were identified as necessary for success. These were: establishing a shared vision of the goals of the programme and its outcomes; maintaining flexibility in implementing the phases and details of the programme; negotiating common understanding with participants; and ensuring fruitful collaboration in planning and implementation. This is important guidance for anyone undertaking collaborative professional development in future.
