Why is it important?

Goal setting and planning are considered basic self-determination skills, which are linked to better post-school outcomes, higher levels of independence, and more community participation for persons with intellectual disability. It is therefore important that students learn basic self-determination skills at school, so that they can improve their overall quality of life.

Perspectives

This research shows that, while students tend to learn how to set goals at school, learning how to make plans for goal attainment is rarely addressed. This indicates the need to provide educators with instructional materials for how they can teach these skills.
