Why is it important?

The study is important because family experiences can lay the foundation for children’s academic science engagement and influence a longer developmental pathway that grows increasingly sophisticated.

Perspectives

Far too often, in-school learning is valued over informal learning. Family learning and parental support are powerful influences of deeper learning very early in a child's life. We often underestimate the capabilities of young children. Examination of parent-child interactions that take place in everyday science learning has the ability to inform how teachers interact and intervene in children’s science learning in school.
