Framework of the special issue on translation and illustration

What is it about?

Parallel consideration of illustration and translation is an important contribution to the study of books as global cultural objects. This editorial concentrates on the impact and issues of such a double approach in book, translation and illustration studies.

Why is it important?

We show how such a double strategy helps to evaluate the flexibility of meaning and purport of books when transferred between cultures. Thus, the cultural value and complex meaning of translated and illustrated editions is richer than previously appreciated.

Writing this editorial and editing this special issue allowed us to bring together scholars who have used this approach in their work on 19th-century artefacts and compare their methods and results.
