What is it about?

This article is about the relations between value added assessment and student motivation. We demonstrate that when value-added assessment models are implemented carefully and appropriately, the information about student growth can be utilized to positively enhance students' academic motivation.

Why is it important?

Testing and assessment often are focused solely on learning outcomes (i.e., test scores), and not on student development/progress over time. When students (and teachers) can see that learning is truly developing over time (for a particular student), students can be shown that they are progressing, and this can lead to enhanced motivation, rather than frustration.

Perspectives

Students are all too often concerned with how their test scores compare to those of others; value-added assessments allow for the examination of growth over time. A focus on growth can be used by educators to enhance motivation by showing students that they are truly progressing in their learning.
