What is it about?
We examine how the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) talks about immigration. Looking at the electoral programmes between 1994 and 2019, we can identify a shift to more negative views on immigration. We argue that this shift after 2017 is related to the restructuring of the ÖVP into a leadership party.

Radical right parties and extremist movements have received much attention, but to better understand how political parties talk about migration, we also need to consider mainstream parties.
