What is it about?
The article presents a new analysis of the grief period in Cicero's life after he lost his only daughter, based on letters, a self-consolation an d his philosophical reflection on grief as an emotion. The three types of writings, I argue, represent three stages of his grief, because grief is a process that can be tracked in his moods and self-admonishments.

Why is it important?
The article illustrates how the response of an intellectual can be compared to a modern case (C.S. Lewis), thereby showing the universal aspects of bereavement.
