What is it about?

Different cultures have different ideas about when someone becomes an adult. Extensive research has investigated these ideas in different countries, including Greece. Most of this research asks emerging adults (adults aged 18-25) about their ideas. In this study, we compare the emerging adults' with their parents' ideas. We found that, in Greece, adulthood is a construct that is largely shared by emerging adults and their parents

Why is it important?

This comparison is important because negotiations on the meaning of adulthood hold a central position in the intergenerational communication and sheds light on parents’ role in the adulthood experience of their children.

Perspectives

Writing this article gave us the opportunity to provide space to emerging adults and their parents to share their ideas about what they think of adulthood, in contrast to asking them to answer to quantitative measures, as is often the case in the related research.
