Why is it important?
At the time, Venuti's ideas seemed revolutionary. Someone had to point out that some of them were quite old, others were contradictory, and there was no easy revolution on offer.
Perspectives
At the time, I thought this review might spark a debate of some kind. Unfortunately people seemed only to see the few sarcastic remarks. No attention was paid to the ways in which a debate might have moved us beyond technocratic descriptions, or to the reasons why I appreciated Venuti's work precisely for that reason.
