What is it about?

This article shows that catenative verb constructions in English, such as "Mary stopped crying" or "Sam helped run the tournament" have all of the semantic and syntactic characteristics of serial verb constructions found in non-IndoEuropean languages. But this demonstration only works if one uses a Role and Reference Grammar analysis.

Why is it important?

This article also shows that catenative verb constructions in English cannot be counted as serial verb constructions if one uses a generative grammar analysis, as the basic architecture of this theoretical approach excludes this comparison.

Perspectives

Personally, I think this piece is the best I have ever published.
