What is it about?

This study examines how a three-month study abroad experience affects advanced learners of English, focusing on improvements in grammar and vocabulary skills and changes in motivation. It compares their progress after studying abroad with their progress from regular university classes at home. The results show learners improve their language skills over time, approaching native-speaker levels, especially after studying abroad. Additionally, their motivation and positive attitudes towards the English-speaking community increase in both settings.

Why is it important?

This research is important because it provides evidence that studying abroad can lead to significant improvements in language skills and motivation, which are crucial for successful language acquisition. It shows that experiential learning in an immersive environment not only enhances fluency but also strengthens learners’ connections to the target culture. These insights can help educators and policymakers design more effective language programmes that combine formal instruction with international experiences to boost long-term language proficiency and cultural engagement.

Perspectives

As someone dedicated to advancing language education, I believe this study offers valuable insights into the lasting benefits of study abroad programmes. It highlights how experiential learning fosters both linguistic and motivational growth, providing a compelling case for integrating international experiences into language curricula. This research can inspire educators to optimise study abroad initiatives for maximum impact on learners’ linguistic confidence and cultural awareness.
