What is it about?

Proverbs are still used in political speeches in French and Italian. In this paper, I have focused on the most frequently uttered proverbs in French and Italian at the Plenary sessions of the European Parliament from 2014 to 2022. Furthermore, I have underlined the importance of studying proverbs from a multimodal perspective and I have pointed out some difficulties the interpreter may encounter when having to deal with proverbs in simultaneous interpreting, as well as some strategies.

Why is it important?

This study has underlined the importance of taking into account the utterance of proverbs in real settings, through a linguistic perspective and using authentic audiovisual data. This kind of analysis is also important for a translation and interpretation perspective.

Perspectives

Research on the proverb (which, as I have shown in this article, is far from exhausted) will increasingly have to focus on authentic data obtained from audiovisual media. This paper represents a first step in that direction.
