What is it about?

This study examined domain-specific activities practiced by expert American Sign Language (ASL)-English interpreters and their relevance to expertise development. Nineteen activities were identified and four were rated as highly relevant to improvement of interpreting. The activities and their characteristics were compared to the professional development activities recommended by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and domain-specific activities in other professions to determine which activities might be most effective for interpreting improvement.

This study identifies four activities that could result in performance gains and skill development for ASL-English interpreters. The findings may serve to guide interpreters in selecting professional development activities and enhancing their interpreting performance.
