What is it about?

Cancer cells have increased need for energy for growth and survival in unfavorable environments. Here we show that ovarian cancer cells rely on fat to maintain their functions and grow uninhibited. Therefore, blocking an enzyme necessary for building up fat drives cancer cells to certain death.

Why is it important?

We identify an enzyme that is critical for cancer cell survival. This provides new opportunities for strategic inhibition to arrest cancer in its roots.

Perspectives

Is fat good or bad for cancer? Here we show that a diet rich in saturated fat fosters cancer growth, while a diet rich in saturated fat together with a new enzyme inhibitor exerts paradoxical anti-cancer effects.
