What is it about?

A new methodology for implementing an acoustic source in a propagation model for solving the wave equation is presented; the same approach is possible for electromagnetic applications. The new method enables propagation in a confined domain characterized by the presence of objects and other sources. The definition of a non-dimensional number, the Encumbrance, to evaluate the scattering effects of a source, both acoustic or electromagnetic, is presented and discussed.

Why is it important?

The non-dimensional Encumbrance estimates the scattering effect of a source near a surface on the total acoustic field, starting from the characteristics of the source and the domain. The new source injection method enables the propagation of complex acoustic sources, such as propellers, wind turbines, etc., near reflecting surfaces or obstacles.

Perspectives

The methodology enables the characterization and propagation of different fluid-induced noise, typical of engineering processes, in the realistic domain, which is paramount for noise risk assessment.
