What is it about?

What do the rhythmic beating of cardiac pacemaker cells, the complex signaling of neurons in the brain, the stability of power grid networks, and the behavior of multimode lasers have in common? Surprisingly, they are all examples of systems composed of coupled oscillators – elements that can synchronize their rhythms in fascinating and often complex ways. This study delves into synchronization dynamics of laser frequency combs. They have been seen synchronizing and desynchronizing to form chimera states, where coherence and incoherence coexist.
