What is it about?

Engineers are interested in the vortex-shedding behavior, which is known as the von Karman vortex street. In our daily lives, vortex street forms during many of our activities including walking, running, or swimming. In our research, we investigated the vortex shedding transition observed in two inline crossing circular cylinders (One can imagine that we are interested in the invisible vortex around two inline walking people). The effect of relative position and arrangement of the two walking people have of significant effect on the vortex behavior between them!

Why is it important?

The vortex generation and mixing are significant in the fluid mixing and the force acting on the bluff body. In our study, we confirmed the critical value of separation and inclination angle between two cylinders to achieve the co-shedding vortex behavior, which holds the potential to bring about a higher mixing level or higher lift force fluctuation. These two resultants could be used to amplify the fuel-air mixing efficiency or vibration energy for a freely oscillating energy harvester.

Perspectives

I hope this article's visualization of vortex shedding transformations can make people aware of the invisible, wonderful vortex structures that exist all around us.
