What is it about?

The paper is a comprehensive review of studies on flows over circular cylinders in confinement. Many aspects of the confined flow are summarised in this paper, including the multiple flow resonances, shear layer instability and the asymmetry of the flow at a high confinement ratio. Most of these characteristics are not found in flows past a circular cylinder without confinement.

Why is it important?

The paper outlines the significant findings of studies from the early 1940s to date, which condenses the most important features of the confined flow.

Perspectives

Apart from reviewing previous work, this paper also provides some potential practical applications of the confined flows and research gaps for future studies. A lot of flow features are yet to be explored.
