What is it about?

There is asymmetricity in composition of lipids between outer and inner leaflets of cell plasma membranes. Our molecular dynamics study revealed how physico-chemical properties differ between outer and inner leaflets of hepatocytes plasma membranes by their asymmetric lipid composition.

Why is it important?

Molecular level knowledge on difference in physico-chemical properties between outer and inner leaflets of cell plasma membranes will lead to understanding of molecular mechanism of biological functions of cell plasma membranes. It is also shown that how correctly we can construct a model of cell plasma membranes on a computer, based on lipid composition analyses of cell plasma membranes.

Perspectives

In the lipid raft model of cell plasma membranes, an occurrence of lateral organization of specific lipid species is emphasized. In the next series paper, it will be shown how lateral organization state of cholesterol molecules differs between the two leaflets.
