What is it about?

The National Artificial Intelligence Institute for Exceptional Education is working on artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to help school speech-language pathologists serve children with speech and language disabilities. To accomplish our goals, we need to do science as an effective interdisciplinary team. The team includes experts from communication sciences and disorders, education, computer science, engineering, and human-computer interaction. In this paper, we discuss the basics of "the science of team science" with examples from our Institute's experiences.

Why is it important?

Speech-language pathologists in schools do not have adequate capacity to identify and serve all the children who need their services. Artificial intelligence can help if scientists from many different disciplines work together. Using best practices in team science will facilitate innovative solutions for serving children.

Perspectives

Doing team science effectively is not easy, especially with a large team like ours. We have 10 institutions and upwards of 30 faculty, as well as 70+ students! When people from different disciplines really work at learning from each other, and share common goals, the results can be amazing.
