What is it about?

The purpose of this study was to describe the assessment methods practitioners and researchers currently use to measure communication skills in individuals with minimal verbal skills. We also wanted to gain information about professionals' satisfaction with their current assessment methods, as well as the factors they consider when selecting assessments for this population.

Why is it important?

There are few standardized tools or strategies developed specifically to assess communication in people with minimal verbal skills (Kasari et al., 2013). Despite this documented dearth of measures, clinicians and researchers need to make decisions about programming and monitoring progress based on some assessment of current levels of communication functioning. Results describe the assessment methods practitioners and researchers currently use to measure communication skills in individuals with minimal verbal skills. We also discuss professionals' satisfaction with their current assessment methods.
