What is it about?

How prelinguistic communication skills (around 1 to 2 years of age) such as gestures, social communication and play skills are associated with later self-regulation skills (around age 5).

Why is it important?

Late talking without other concomitant difficulties seemed to lead to weaker self-regulation skills overall. Slow development in all communication skills showed more specific connections to regulation ability.

Perspectives

It is important to study these connections from the point of view of intervention. It might be that by supporting communication skills very early on, there are benefits in other areas of development such as self-regulation as well.
