What is it about?

This study searched for different questionnaires that measure communication or participation in children (aged 5-18) with communication disorders. The authors searched through different databases to find questionnaires that either asked kids directly or asked their parents about communication or participation. They found 29 questionnaires in total, and reviewed the individual questions based on criteria for communicative participation. They found 145 questions that specifically focused on communicative participation. Most of these questions were about how kids interact with others, with fewer focusing on other areas like school or leisure. The study suggests that these questions could be used to create a new test, but more work is needed to make sure they cover everything important.

Why is it important?

Communicative participation is the primary outcome measure of speech and language therapy. However, there are no measurement instruments for children and adolescents that measure communicative participation. This study provides the first step of the development of a such a measurement instrument.

Perspectives

Conducting this research and writing the article was a great pleasure, as it gave me more insight in the construct of communicative participation and the need to develop a good instrument that measures communicative participation, in co-creation with the target population for whom the instrument is intended.
