What is it about?

Spinal disease is very common with advancing age and can cause difficulty swallowing; but, it is unclear how often spinal disease affects swallowing function. This study evaluates how cervical spinal disease may impact swallowing function in dysphagic individuals observed during modified barium swallow studies.

Why is it important?

Cervical spine disease is very common, even in healthy adults. Our findings suggest that disease of the cervical spine can significantly impact swallowing function in a subset of patients. This is an important consideration in evaluating patients with difficulty swallowing as a potential cause of dysfunction.
