How to set up collaborations between academia and industrial biotech companies

As academic scientist, I love interacting with industry, but have also learned, occasionally the hard way, about some of the pitfalls associated with this mode of collaboration. This paper started out as some loosely organized lecture notes I prepared (on a Sunday afternoon) for a workshop at a Copenhagen Bioscience Conference organized by Jens Nielsen. At the conference, Jens and I intensively discussed the subject with other academic and industrial 'veterans' of public-private collaboration. We then decided to organize our collective experiences and thoughts on the subject in this commentary. We do not claim to reveal any deep wisdom, but do hope that this publication will inspire and help colleagues and especially those who are new to this interesting, dynamic interface.
