What is it about?
First large-scale RCT showing VR mode matters. We tested three main approaches (plus combined) in one study with 377 Nigerian adolescents, holding content and Meta Quest 2 hardware constant. Modes gave significantly different – even opposite – effects. “VR” is not one single treatment.

Why is it important?
First large-scale RCT showing VR mode matters. We tested three main approaches (plus combined) in one study with 377 Nigerian adolescents, holding content and Meta Quest 2 hardware constant. Modes gave significantly different – even opposite – effects. “VR” is not one single treatment. Third-person observation (Observe) outperformed first-person embodiment on empathy and compassion (d = 0.51–0.62) for emotionally charged ethnic discrimination content. Embodiment showed a negative main effect on compassion. This challenges the common assumption that more embodiment is always better. Psychological distance acts as a boundary condition. First-person immersion can create overload and personal distress that cancels empathy gains. Third-person helps by preserving self-other distinction. First test of a moral exemplar (role model) avatar in VR discrimination scenarios. It reduced motivation to act (d = -0.58). New finding with testable mechanisms. Clear separation of empathy and compassion as related but distinct constructs, measured separately with validated scales. Effects were strong immediately but fully attenuated by 4 months (5 timepoints to 6 months). Important for booster timing. VR outperformed identical text-based narrative perspective-taking, which was no better than control. For Character & Moral Education Evidence against “more immersive = better.” Greater immersion and added design features can harm outcomes. Caution on embedding moral exemplars in emotional content.
Perspectives
First large-scale VR empathy RCT in Sub-Saharan Africa with African adolescents using culturally tailored Connected Spaces content (Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, Niger Delta). Simple controller-free Observe condition works best – opens door to low-cost smartphone VR under $10 for resource-constrained settings.
