What is it about?

Goal-setting use is particularly beneficial to athletes high in self-inflated narcissism (reflecting overconfidence) in training contexts, improving concentration and quality of competition preparation. Dominant narcissism (reflecting strong willingness for dominance) appears to have some protective effects on self-inflated narcissism which enhance the quality of training.

Why is it important?

Training context is thought demotivating to athletes high in narcissism as it lacks in opportunity for glory or self-enhancement. According to the findings of this research, goal-setting appears a useful self-enhancement strategy that fosters a vision for athletes, creates a sense of self-enhancement and thus helps athletes high in self-inflated narcissism train better. The work also underscores the importance of adopting a multidimensional view on narcissism (e.g., self-inflated vs dominant narcissism).
