What is it about?

This study used a personality test to examine mental health in transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals. Comparisons were provided between two groups of TGD individuals (i.e., those in mental health treatment and those not currently in treatment) and two presumed cisgender samples (i.e., the test's reference sample and a large outpatient clinical sample). We found that TGD individuals compared to cisgender individuals experience greater mental health disparities.

Why is it important?

This study likely reflects the impact of minority stress on transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals' mental health. Minority stress is additive stress that individuals from marginalized populations (e.g., gender diverse) experience, beyond typical daily stressors experienced by everyone. Additionally, this is one of the first studies that examined a large and broad personality test rather than short, symptom specific scales commonly used in other research.

Perspectives

This hopefully encourages future work to examine psychology assessment in underserved populations to promote health equity and social justice.
