Why is it important?
The results of our study suggest that the psychology doctoral students benefit from graduate programs that encourage and promote self-care practice, particularly during times of crisis, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. We found that consistent self-care practice can help reduce graduate student stress and enhance student’s quality of life.
Perspectives
I hope this article will encourage graduate training programs in psychology to assess their program's emphasis on self-care and adjust their curriculum accordingly. Graduate school in psychology has unique challenges that can create barriers to consistent self-care practice for students. I would like to bring attention to this topic because it is not often discussed during psychology graduate training. Psychology doctoral students would greatly benefit from learning more about self-care and how it can be implemented.
