What is it about?

Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation is a key secondary prevention program following acute cardiac and pulmonary events. Unfortunately, attendance remains suboptimal. This study explored psychological factors related to attendance utilizing mobile ecological momentary assessment methodology. Results suggest that increased experiential avoidance and negative mood are negatively related to next-week program attendance.

Why is it important?

This is the first study to our knowledge that has utilized ecological momentary assessment methods to explore psychological factors in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. Findings suggest there are psychological mechanisms/processes that could be targeted through psychosocial intervention. Such interventions may have the potential to positively impact program attendance.

Perspectives

I hope that this study drives other researchers to utilize ecological momentary assessment methods to understand psychological factors and the patient experience in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation populations. I also hope the results encourage other researchers to design behavioral interventions for this population that specifically target mechanisms of change such as experiential avoidance.
