We have provided clear evidence that listening to music before or during physical activity offers potential benefits for exercisers and athletes. Music has the capacity to enhance enjoyment, improve physical performance, reduce perceived exertion, and benefit physiological efficiency across a range of physical activities.

Why is it important?

Lots of people listen to music when exercising or before playing sport, but where is the evidence that music is beneficial? We have combined the results of decades of research to show that music really can make a difference.

Perspectives

We knew both from our own research and our lived experience that music is beneficial during physical activity. Combining the findings from more than 130 studies enabled us to provide compelling evidence of the benefits.
