What is it about?

Bhutan has a unique culture which is deeply grounded on religions. Based on their culture, many people avoid livestock culling, which is carried out as a standard livestock management worldwide. This means livestock production in Bhutan is very unique. So, how long do cattle in Bhutan live? What are the diseases that constrain cattle production in Bhutan? What do cattle farmers in Bhutan worry about? We explored these questions in this study.

Why is it important?

We always have to prioritise. This also holds for livestock disease control. We have to target some diseases that are more important than others. How to decide which are important? There might be various ways to do it; one way is to assess how much a given disease shortens a production life of cattle. To do so, we need to know two things; how long cattle live without diseases, and how long cattle live once they are affected by a given disease. This paper provides these information. Now people can start assessing which cattle diseases should be prioritised for control in Bhutan.
