What is it about?

This is the first report on the detection of a livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strain harboring the mecC gene variant in Brazil.

Why is it important?

The genomic features indicate that the strain is of bovine origin but harbors a repertory of virulence and multidrug resistance genes, including the potential to produce enterotoxin A.

Perspectives

The genomic context of the mecC-mediated resistance investigated in this study can improve our understanding of the origin and evolution mecC-MRSA in livestock and its role on public health.
