What is it about?

The paper notes that while historically, only large companies and organizations could afford information and communications technologies (ICT), currently most newly developed ICT are targeted at consumers. As a result, many employees personally own better ICT than is provided by their employers and want to use those devices and services at work. However, trend poses a challenge for employers worried about security and control of their information. The paper develops a three part model (technology, people and practices) to understand this development. Drawing on studies of technology use in banks and consulting firms, the paper outlines changes happening along these three dimensions and offers advice on how to manage these changes.

Why is it important?

Many organizations are challenged by employees desires to continue using their own personal ICT devices. The paper offers a way to understand the changes and advice about how to manage the challenges.

Perspectives

Seeing this paper published is bitter sweet, because it was in development for so long. It's my final project with my late colleague Bernhard Katzy and it's sad that he's not with us to see it published.
